21 Jump Street – Season 1

The first season of FOX's crime show premiered after the midseason of 1987

It all begins here, as baby-faced rookie Officer Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) is assigned to an elite squad of young undercover cops – Judy Hoffs (Holly Robinson), Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise) and Harry Truman Ioki (Dustin Nguyen) – to infiltrate high schools and fight crime. Frederic Forrest and Steven Williams co-star in this classic first season as the captains of the famous Jump Street gang.

Episode 01/02: Pilot
I was thinking about watching one of the older series, since I planned for years to finally watch the 80s Knight Rider and stuff. Well, I started with this little show. And I saw it was produced and shot in Vancouver, so I can see this freaky town in the 80s style. Awesome, dude.
The pilot episodes were alright; it had its length, it had its interesting part, some parts were really terrible, some parts were totally funny (and I don’t know if these were intended to be unintentionally funny), the chemistry of the team is great, and the pool of actors is interesting, and not just because of the young Johnny Depp.
It was hilarious to see Hanson actually working as a street officer for the first act of the episode. It was hilarious to see him fail and to see all the stereotypes for such a role (the “want to be a cop” thing, the father thing, nobody from the precinct likes him and so on), and it was hilarious, when he went with his uniform to the Jump Street church. Most of the second part of the episode was boring and didn’t interest me – it was mainly Hanson trying to fit into the high school and bullying around; instead of getting closer to the bad guys, he just tried to be a teenager again. Which was good enough for an introduction to this series, but the writers spend way too much time on that. And when the story finally began somewhat during the last part, it was already over again – at least there was a bit action in Downtown Vancouver, muhaha.
Kenny (Brandon Douglas) doing drugs was ridiculous and that scene in the locker room was completely unnecessary. It didn’t even bring anything for Kenny as a guest character, and the drug story was never mentioned before. Apart from that, the opening scene was incredibly bad acted by everyone.
But I liked the 80s style, I didn’t like the soundtrack (of course, when the producers had to change it up, because of the music rights for the DVD), I like the characters and I had a few moments to smile on. 5,5/10
