Brothers – Season 1

FOX's comedy show aired during the fall months of 2009

UPN wasn’t there anymore, so the black comedy series “Brothers” only could be aired on FOX. The series stars former NFL star Michael Strahan as Mike and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Chill, two estranged brothers who are pressured to get along by their parents (Carl Weathers and CCH Pounder) after Mike moves back to his home town of Houston. Mike is retired from the NFL, while Chill, a paraplegic using a wheelchair after a car wreck, runs a restaurant.

Episode 01: House Rules
I already posted a review during the fall season. Click here for more. 3/10

Episode 02: Anniversary
No, this is definitely not a good sitcom. The story is really shitty (why would a mom be mad about the girl her 30ish-year-old son brought home?), the humor is barely funny (I laughed two or three times) and the characters are just full of stereotypes. The whole premise is missing (why did Mike return to the family again? Second episode, and the writers already forgot that) and the rest is just awkward. Why FOX brought this up, I don’t know.
Well, at least it is a show to waste time on. And by the way: This episode actually was better than the pilot, even though the story of the week was brainless. But I laughed more than during the last episode. 4/10

Brothers: Unfunny Black Comedy on FOX

Well, I could say I will never be friends with this sort of comedy show, before I even started to watch it. I have no interests in black comedies anymore (for years now) and for my taste, they don’t work anymore. They are always full of cliches, don’t have any good actors and their characters are pretty boring, and I am not talking about the chemistry between the characters. Long intro, short conclusion: I didn’t like this new black comedy pilot episode.

It was just not funny; the actual series introduction was missing, interesting characters were missing, interesting stories were missing and possible running gags were already dead, before the pilot was finished. And I definitely don’t know what C.C.H. Pounder has something to do in this show. She has too much talent to waste it in a FOX comedy show, which will not even see a second season. The fact that FOX is airing this “masterpiece” on a Friday death slot, makes a cancellation before the series hit a two-numbered episode much more possible.
Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (what’s with the nickname?) and Michael Strahan might be a good cast for shows like this one (and I think that Carl Weathers is more than just a simple miscast), but why are producers not able to produce a good series comedy once in a while? Friends is still for me the last favorite sitcom with laughing audiences in the back. And this show ended in 2005. Since then no other sitcom could wow me – and that is just lame.
I don’t even have more to write about, except that I was about to smile two times during the pilot. If Brothers is ending like Do Not Disturb last year (canceled after three aired episodes), then FOX has surely to think about their ways to bring comedies on the air. Because this won’t work anymore in the future. Not with such dumb ideas to get a sitcom up and running.
3 out of 10 points.
