Cougar Town: Courteney Cox in Underwear

I am surprised. ABC’s new Wednesday might be an interesting day. Cougar Town is the second comedy after Modern Family I really like. Almost everything is perfect, just the over-the-top acting and a story I can’t think of being interesting for a whole season makes it a bit difficult for me. But when the writers have some talent and don’t put too much cliches in it, than this will be an entertaining series.
First I now learned through the series, what the word “cougar” means. Then I was happy to see Courteney Cox and especially Busy Philipps back in main roles in TV shows. Then I was surprised that the pilot was actually funny. Not really funny as hell like Modern Family, but still more than funny as Accidentally on Purpose.
I couldn’t get into the over-the-top characters for the episode, but I believe I will get to them while watching the next episodes. I hope this doesn’t get worse, because I have high hopes now for getting an interesting ABC Wednesday (even though I believe Hank and The Middle next week won’t wow me and Eastwick won’t survive the season).
So, we have all the “old woman dates young man” (or conversely) together in one TV show. Jules is freshly divorced, has a grown-up son named Travis (Dan Byrd), sells houses and wants to have fun. Her friend Ellie (Christa Miller) has boredom in her marriage and wants Jules to pepp it up, even though it means “Just come by my house and drink and scrabble with me, without the Scrabble”. But Laurie thinks Jules has to put back on the market of willing women again – a market full of 40-year-old desperate and divorced chicks with kids, who are looking for younger man, more kids who are fresh out of college and hungry for 40-year-old desperate and divorced chicks who want to have a little bit of fun in their lives. Well, for Jules isn’t it working very good. Though she picks a boy toy, she actually is angry about her 40 year old male neighbor Grayson (Josh Hopkins) and screams to him “Stop having sex with babies”, because she doesn’t; she has just envy of all the old mamas who have their boy toys for more than just a night.

If the show would be more of a midlife crisis series like Californication was in the first (and a bit in the second) season, maybe it would have more quality as it already has. With a bit more drama story, the series would have really nice characters (and the over-the-top acting would automatically stop, though I liked Courteney Cox screaming like a wild chick) and a warranty for real character and story development. But maybe development is coming during the next episode.
By the way: Though I hate it when shows advertise with the sex appeal of its main actor or actress (with undressing its main character), I actually was surprised how good.looking Courteney Cox still is. She looks like 30.
7 out of 10 points.
