Easy Money – Season 1

Sometimes it’s hard for us to feel connected. We feel alienated in our home, apart from our own family. Morgan Buffkin (Jeff Hephner) is no exception. He’s the favored son helping to run Prestige Payday Loans, his eccentric family’s enormously successful short-term loan company. While his mother Bobette (Laurie Metcalf), the brains behind the business (even behind her husband Roy [Nick Searcy], dotes on him and sings his praises, Morgan has never quite fit in and he’s doubting the ever-shifting stories she’s woven about his childhood in the Buffkin household. Furthermore, he’s having second thoughts about being the “heavy” for Prestige – running down ne’er-do-wells and gambling addicts in an era of subprime mortgage lending and four dollar gasoline?

Episode 01: DNA
Everybody should love that show, because it was aired on TheCW, the new teen MTV network; but this series is completely outside of the audience. The Media Rights Capital had to know that this show won’t work on a network, but they earn my full trust, because they did it anyway.
Good introduction into the series. As well as in The Philanthropist, the main story of the show isn’t really interesting, but at least the writers did more with the themes in here than the writers did in The Philanthropist. The characters are wonderful and not stereotype; the story isn’t really stereotype; the relationships amongst the characters could be more detailed in the pilot, but what I saw was good enough to amuse me. Even a bit of humor was in this episode. And even a little fist fight (despite the bad cutting in this particular scene).
The story was good. Prestige is getting some competition; some relationships are not even “true” and Morgan learns that he might be not a Buffkin at all – interesting way to introduce the main character.
Oh why was this show running on a network channel? I already love this show and it didn’t even live long enough. 8/10
