Episode Review: INSECURITY (“The Doctor”, Series Premiere)

I was thinking to see something complete terrible here, but I was surprised that it wasn’t the case. Okay, the first couple of minutes were terrible and absolutely unfunny, but the bigger part of the episode could be a good persiflage of all the crime shows and movies out there, and even could spoof the CSI franchise, as well as all the investigating shows.

The only thing the pilot couldn’t do is define the series. On one hand it wanted to be a comedy (but failed to deliver the humor, because it felt forced in every second of every scene), although it didn’t want to be serious (which kinda worked, but it felt forced too). But I liked the second half because of all the spoofs, and because it was actually funny at some points, though I never laughed out loud. But the conversations between Alex (Natalie Lisinska) and Randy (Ron Pederson) were to treat with a smile, since it was awkward to see a federal agent and an evil doctor talk about their highschool days, or the scene where Randy allegedly died (his comical and theatric death was probably the funniest moment in the episode and could have been the moment to really laugh out loud).

Other than that, I kinda liked the way Benjamin (Richard Yearwood) and JoJo (Grace Lynn Kung) were working. He could be one of the most stupid characters in television history, and she was just cool in her mad way – how she investigated the pizza and figured out that it was thrown out of a moving car, or how she threatened the waitress with her killing skills – I hope the writers have some running gags up their sleeves with her, because I totally like her after the first 22 minutes. But when it comes to Benjamin, I was only smiling when he was drawing a knife in front of the family.

The rest was lame. Claude (Rémy Girard) in the SM club, him discussing with Burt (Matthew MacFadzean) about the evaluation, and their behavior in front of their boss… not funny, not interesting, and it pulled the episode even more down than it was. When the writers are able to start some storylines, instead of telling episodic storylines about a shitty team of federal agents, INSECURITY could be quite nice.

But the pilot wasn’t. At least it wasn’t as terrible as I was expecting at first. 5.5/10

She can kill you with that!
