Episode Review: SEX AND THE CITY (“Secret Sex”)

leave a comment »

It was a surprisingly good episode after my return to the show, even though I thought it would be boring. And I kinda think that the writers finally told a story for the characters, instead of letting Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) tell a story for her column. Okay, both happened, but I think it was the first time that happened.

It was good that the Carrie/Big (Chris Noth) relationship was finally developed. Though I absolutely can’t see the two together as a couple (and I never did it, when I was watching the show during its free-TV airing in Germany), it was a nice little story for the episode – with some awkward moments, when Carrie figured out that she eventually is the secret girlfriend of Big’s, and a nice outcome, when he explained those situations (and where he actually was just a normal guy).

The other storylines weren’t interesting though. I accept that one of the girlfriends has a secret-sex storyline going with t he column, but the writers could have spent more time on Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and her rabbi Shmuel (Glenn Fleshler). Because it actually felt like as if the writers had to bring a story for either Charlotte or Samantha, before they don’t have any screentime in the episode. Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) boyfriend of the episode with the fantasy of being spanked was alright, and the episodic arc of Mike (Michael Port) and his grenade girlfriend Libby (Heather Barclay) (damn, I sure learned a lot from JERSEY SHORE) was even more interesting than anything else in the episode, and that surely means something.

Other than that, the episode was missing some humor. With the exception of the very awkward “penis at my head” moment or Carrie, I couldn’t laugh one single time (another weakness of the first season), which makes it a good, but forgettable episode. COUPLING did better, when it comes to girlfriends finding porn in their boyfriends’ collection. 7/10

A rule every woman should now: Everyone of their boyfriends has a porn collection

There's a penis on Carrie's head...

Sex and the City 1.05: The Power of Female Sex

The one and only money to buy the one and only drug in Manhattan

This episode practically tells me that the female sex is much more stronger and “bossier” than the male sex. So is it better to be female after all? A question, which I will answer in just a few seconds.
The episode was good and somewhat interesting. Again the writers not only included Carrie’s column story, but they gave Charlotte a story for herself, collecting the cunts of an artist (well… literally, I think), as well as giving Samantha some jealousy over New York’s powerful woman: the hostess of Balzac. And not to forget the “fake” relationship between Miranda and Skipper, which looks like the writers didn’t want it to have in the series, but somehow they have to give Miranda a least one storyline.
On a side note: Carrie finally told the truth about her substance problem: Shoes are really expensive these days.

Sex and the City 1.04: Valley of the Twenty-Something Guys

Pfff, sex in a clothing store is the next best thing to do!

This seems to be the fairness of the world: Younger guys adore older women, older women adore younger guys. At least I think this is a fact on this western world. Sex and the City picks up this topic, with the four girls having to date – either it is the next chance for the boyfriend of the life, or it is just a fling to dive deep into the Twentysomething pool. After all, there have to be much Twentysomething in New York – back in 1998 and today in the new century.
Anyway, it was a good episode, and I’ve had the feeling that the writers took care of the story for once. Carrie has already relationship problems without having a relationship at the moments (5-hour kissing marathons don’t count), Samantha finally showed some nudity (which would be the first real nude scene in this series), the Miranda/Skipper fuck thing is awkward, and the episode delivered real humor with Charlotte’s anal story. Damn, I really was laughing.

Sex and the City 1.03: Bay of Married Pigs

Hello, big guy. How you doin'?

Men never understand women. But men kinda don’t know what to begin with Sex and the City as a series. Some of the men like the series, but maybe because of their style and behavior in front of people (open-minded men, who don’t care about the sex, when they talk to people; gay people; scientists, who try to understand women with a little bit of help from this series; TV junkies, who watch anything; and other persons), but most of the men hate four trashy girls, who only talk about the same things. And on the other hand, the series doesn’t have much to offer anyway (which is true…) – so, this is my third attempt to understand women (twelve years later), with my second attempt to describe the view of an innocent and unimportant 23-year-old guy, who sits in front of his laptop and wrote this text you are reading. After all, I have to understand women, too. Every man has to do that.
And before I am starting to write an essay, which is actually a nice topic to do one day, am losing some words about the episode, since this is still a review: It was a good one. I recognized a bit of a story, and a bit of character depths. But the third episode is still like the two previous ones – it has nothing to offer, which could lead me to watch the next episodes. No wonder, why the men didn’t like it. Sex in the title, but no sex in the episode. A sad face joins me right now.

Sex and the City 1.02: Models and Mortals

A high art in the Big Apple: Getting models into bed.

I was thinking about changing the reviews up a bit again. Especially for shows I can’t really write much about (but chose to do so, which brought me into a very small, world-destroying dilemma), like The Prisoner, or Sex and the City now. So, when the girls are talking about a topic (in this episode: models), I should put my own two cents to the topic – whether I have an own opinion or I don’t know women (…that should be funny). So let’s try.
On a note as a TV junkie: The episode was alright. Again the episode didn’t have much of a story, and instead delivered us something women and men are talking about (or were talking about) on the streets of New York in the last century. And now I know again, why I always had difficulties to get back to the first season of the series and never started to watch it again: Probably all the episodes of the first season are like this one: No story, no real character development, but basically a talk show with four 30-somethings from New York, talking about their love and sex life – based on a screenplay.

Sex and the City 1.01: Sex and the City

Remember: When you're in a car and a hot body is next to you, think about having sex like a man.

I always have my little problems with HBO. Sometimes the shows are completely boring, sometimes they don’t survive my schedule during the first season of a show, and sometimes I don’t see any kind of story and am really bored. I tried The Sopranos two times, and two times I got out of the series after the first season. I tried Six Feet Under two times, same result. I tried The Wire two times, same result. I ended Treme after two episodes, too many characters and not enough story. I ended True Blood after four episodes, it was just not my cup of tea. I think that Entourage is the only series from HBO I really like and am a fan of.
Sex and the City is a different pair of shoes. I watched it on a regular basis, when it was aired in German television – so I have watched seasons three to five and I abandoned the series somewhere in the middle of the sixth season. I kinda liked it, but was never a fan of it. Maybe I wasn’t woman enough for the show, and I think Sex and the City was always overrated. Anyway, in my new attempt to get closer to HBO, I will try to get closer to Sex and the City again. One of the most boring, but interesting shows out there, and somehow the hype must prove itself – though a few years after the series’ end, and when the second movie is about to come out…
