Episode Review: TWO AND A HALF MEN (“Pilot”)

The third of the CBS comedy pilots I wanted to rewatch, and I think it should be the last for now. Since I think that TWO AND A HALF MEN is the funniest of the three I’ve watched, and since I think that there is more behind this show than the other two. And since Charlie Sheen went on a rampage, and made himself a jobless fool.

The pilot was totally alright. It surprisingly took all its time to introduce us to the characters and to the situation, which led Alan (Jon Cryer) to move in with Charlie, and it needed all of this time to look proper. A whole episode is needed for Charlie to realize that Alan and Jake (Angus T. Jones) are better off living with him, instead of realizing it during the first three minutes, so that the rest of the pilot can be wasted with other shit. Even more so, the two and a half men even got surprisingly much characteristics. Of course I see in Charlie today’s Charlie Sheen, and in Alan the awkward man, who can’t be a husband anymore, has to live with his awkwardly sex-addicted brother, and there is his fat son, who has even a bigger mouth than his father. And in the middle, we even got some recurring characters, though they feel like stolen from other sitcoms, reunited in this one.

Like Judith (Marin Hinkle). She ultimately remembered me of Carol from FRIENDS. And Evelyn (Holland Taylor) is the evil mother like in every other TV show. She kinda reminded me of Eleanor Waldorf (GOSSIP GIRL, for those who don’t know), so I hope my memories of the first season actually faded, and I can’t remember if the two women stayed the same during the freshman year.

And what TWO AND A HALF MEN had, which the other two pilots lacked: humor. Sorry, but I’m laughing when Sheen is on screen, and I’m especially laughing, when Charlie was talking about his life, mirroring his own life five years later, which brought him to the mess we’ve seen lately. And somehow, Cryer makes a good playball for Sheen – I loved the scene on the porch, and I loved how Alan was even more awkward with everything than Charlie.

Short things even shorter: TWO AND A HALF MEN is just funnier for me, and I don’t know why. At least I have thee CBS sitcoms to watch now. Does anybody know a fourth one, which is actually good? 7.5/10

Charlie has a nice break from life. For good.
