Pilot Review: UNDERCOVERS
Are all shows created (or in this case co-created) by J.J. Abrams good? I have no clue, since I never tested Felicity. But judging from the pilots written and/or directed by the new hero of one-hour television dramas I have seen, Undercovers comes of third best. Alias was a masterclass among pilot episodes, Lost did a hell of a lot work in introducing all the characters, but Undercovers was kinda meh. Not much of character work, not much of a thrilling story, not much of interest in following this show throughout the season. Furthermore, I was bored of everything I saw, though it was kinda fun to watch the two married characters working together. But the pilot had the awkward feeling of J.J. Abrams being lazy to get something more on paper or on celluloid, or that it was just an apprentice piece of his to get his new show on the market, so that he is not bored, has some work between his movie business and gets the weekly paycheck. Otherwise I can’t explain, why the pilot is so unenthusiastic, but pretty solid in its making.
